Upgrade & Downgrade
How upgrading, downgrading, and switching billing intervals work in Technical Debt Radar — including proration, timing, and data handling.
Upgrade & Downgrade
You can change your Technical Debt Radar plan at any time from the dashboard. Upgrades take effect immediately. Downgrades take effect at the end of your current billing cycle.
Upgrading
When you upgrade to a higher plan:
- Immediate activation. All features of the new plan are available within seconds.
- Prorated billing. You are charged the difference between your current plan and the new plan, prorated for the remaining days in your billing cycle.
- Credits are topped up. Your AI credit balance is increased to the new plan's allocation immediately. If you had 20 credits remaining on Solo (50/month) and upgrade to Pro (500/month), your balance becomes 500.
Example: Solo to Pro Mid-Cycle
Current plan: Solo ($15/month), billing date: 1st
Upgrade date: March 15 (15 days remaining)
Proration:
Solo remaining value: $15 × (15/30) = $7.50 credit
Pro remaining cost: $49 × (15/30) = $24.50
Charge today: $24.50 − $7.50 = $17.00
Next billing (April 1): $49.00 (full Pro month)
How to Upgrade
Dashboard:
- Go to Settings then Billing
- Click Change Plan
- Select the new plan
- Confirm the prorated charge
- Features activate immediately
CLI:
radar billing upgrade --plan pro
Downgrading
When you downgrade to a lower plan:
- End-of-cycle activation. Your current plan remains active until the end of your billing cycle. You continue to have full access to all current features until then.
- No refund. The current cycle is not refunded. You have already paid for the full period.
- Feature access removed at cycle end. When the new billing cycle starts, features not included in the lower plan are disabled.
- Credits reset to new allocation. On the next billing date, your credits reset to the lower plan's allocation.
What Happens to Your Data
| Data Type | On Downgrade |
|---|---|
| Scan history | Retained. All historical scans remain accessible in the dashboard (read-only). |
| Debt score trends | Retained. Charts continue to show historical data. |
| Repositories | Excess repos are not deleted. They are deactivated. You choose which repos remain active within the new plan's limit. |
| Organization memberships | Excess orgs are deactivated. You choose which to keep. |
| Team members | Excess members are removed from active roles. They retain their accounts and can be re-added on upgrade. |
| AI credit balance | Resets to the new plan's allocation on the next billing date. |
| Configuration files | Unchanged. radar.yml and rules.yml remain in your repo. |
Important: No data is ever deleted on downgrade. Deactivated repos and orgs can be reactivated by upgrading again.
How to Downgrade
Dashboard:
- Go to Settings then Billing
- Click Change Plan
- Select the lower plan
- Confirm that the change takes effect at the end of the current cycle
- A banner shows the date when the downgrade takes effect
Switching Monthly to Annual
You can switch from monthly to annual billing at any time:
- Immediate switch. The annual plan starts now.
- Prorated credit. The unused portion of your current monthly payment is credited toward the annual price.
- 20% savings. All plans are 20% cheaper on annual billing.
Example: Pro Monthly to Pro Annual
Current: Pro monthly at $49/month, 20 days remaining
Annual price: $39/month × 12 = $468/year
Proration:
Monthly remaining value: $49 × (20/30) = $32.67 credit
Annual charge: $468.00
Charge today: $468.00 − $32.67 = $435.33
Next billing: 12 months from today
Switching Annual to Monthly
Switching from annual to monthly takes effect at the end of your annual term. You cannot switch mid-year --- the annual commitment covers the full 12 months. When the annual term ends, you will be billed monthly at the monthly rate.
